New folks are sometimes overwhelmed by getting around GI, but it can help if you think of it as a "place", rather than as a website, as that's how I've tried to orient it -- despite that we currently use "forum" software which is usually used to simply list discussion topics.

The Lay Of The Land

The GI map is a good place to start, as it will show you how the Island has four main areas , each with a different, intuitive theme .

Then think of each area as having a series of rooms, each with a different purpose. And in each room, you will find a variety of "happenings" (threads), each either a scenario in which Residents are interacting, or discussing, something pertaining to the purpose of that room.

Exploring The Island

Newcomers might wander around the Island in a couple of different ways, to see what's been going on in each room, within each area of the Island.

Take A Stroll:

If you start at the entrance to GI, you should be able to page down and see the four major areas of GI, probably listed with a little "plus sign" to its left. Each area is "collapsible", meaning that clicking the plus sign will open up that area and show you all the rooms within it.

This way you can open up each area, one at a time, and check out the different rooms within it. You will find an image depicting each room, with a brief description of what the purpose of the room is -- and clicking on that room's name will take you into that room, where you will see a list of all the threads within that room.

(And likewise, clicking on the title of a given thread will open it up so you can see what's been happening, and join in).

Teleport Right To Your Interests:

Once you're familiar with the different areas and rooms and themes available to you, you might find it handy to jump straight to places of particular interest -- and you're in luck! We have a transporter platform that will beam you straight to any given place!

Once you understand the above Lay Of The Land, the Transporter should be obvious -- you'll find the four main areas of GI listed, and clicking on any will list the rooms within that area... Then clicking on one of those rooms wil transport you directly to that room.

Quick Overview For Veterans:

Once you're familiar with getting around GI, a quick way to catch up on what's been happening is to use the RECENT POSTS feature, which appears right beside the notification of your PMs, near the top-left of every page.

This will give you a quick summary of all the most recent events (posts) in all of the rooms in all of the areas you've elected to see.
